well as i mention earlier my project but i think I'm going to take a different approach to it methinks.
everything i have done previous to this i began thinking visuals and let the sound follow.
i think I'm gonna try a different approach.
i have been brainstorming visuals but i have lots of ideas but.......................
i have decided from looking at the music videos from the people in Brighton made can't remember now but i will make the sound firstly and use audio controllers in 3DS Max to animate the abstract visuals.

linden lab talk
yesterday myself and gearoid attended a talk on computer development from a person working in linden labs.
there was no actual discussion of second life which i was surprised about but she was discussing the employment process of computer game based design.
it was very relevant to anybody looking for a career in some kind of digital media.
for anybody that wasn't there i will just mention the valuable points made.
some were obvious others were not.
interviews does and dont's
do not
1.ask about wages on first interview because it will come across that your driven by money.
2.try to out smart interviewer if if they are wrong but correct and be polite about.
3.apply for a job if you only meet 50% of the criteria that is mentioned, aim for 75% and give it a go.
4.do not poor with an essay of your interests
do
1.dress smartly
2.have a nicely spell checked C.V.
3.be friendly ask questions
4.research company and basic history.
5.ask about promotions to show that you would like to stay with the company for a long time.
6.bring illustrations ETC printed out in portfolio but do not show unless asked in interview.
7.put all relevant work experience on c.v.
8.write a cover letter for your c.v. personalised for the company telling them briefly about yourself.
she also mentioned that it is hard to get work in any media industry it could take a long time to find a job to stick with it.
plus it could take a long time after uni to figure which area you would like to get into.
this is basically what i can remember
if you have any questions I'll elaborate if you ask

interactive design
I've decided to go with and interactive installation dealing with sleep paralysis.
"Sleep paralysis is a common condition characterized by transient partial or total paralysis of skeletal muscles and areflexia that occurs upon awakening from sleep or less often while falling asleep. Stimuli such as touch or sound may terminate the episode, which usually has a duration of seconds to minutes. This condition may occur in normal subjects or be associated with narcolepsy, cataplexy, and hypnagogic hallucinations. The pathophysiology of this condition is closely related to the normal hypotonia that occur during REM sleep.[1] When considered to be a disease, isolated sleep paralysis is classified as MeSH D020188."

i will try create or mimic the imagery and sounds that SP induces. the projector will be set up in a room with a distance sensor.there will be 5 different hot spots when stood will play7 a sequence of different music and images.
when the person walks in the door it will be off but when they hit the first hot spot it will set off,at first it will be over powering but as they walk closer to the projector the sounds and images will calm.
this is the basic start i will use a collection of different imagery ,some real life of person in a bed but it will be mostly abstract.
i will create all the sound from scratch basically collecting raw sounds with and mini disc and a mic and editing it in pro tools.

Conclusion on Futures Designs
At first I was very sceptical with this project. My narrow mindedness questioned it.
“How can students in six weeks come up with a future design and technology when there are people sitting in rooms brainstorming to come up with ideas like this.”
How I was sadly wrong.
In the mere 6 weeks I feel I have stumbled upon two or three ideas in my subconsciousness which are commercially viable and in the future, they would be squeezed into a niche market and help change or simplify people’s needs and life.
In such a large community- the world, with some many interests and hobbies and problems in the world I think everyone has an opportunity if they put their mind to it to be a visionary and creative thinker.
In the mist of this project and all the research it opened up a world I was not in touch with the advances in technologies are outstanding. From using brain frequencies for controlling robotic limbs to micro chipped medicine releasing drugs into your system.
The question with this, where is it going to take us?
In the next hundred years if we have the advances of technologies like the last hundred, will we even have to leave our houses to experience “life.” Will holidays consist of putting on virtual goggles and other senses generators to experience for instance swimming in the Great Barrier Reef? A projector to stimulate your skin, to feel the water and 3D holograms of the ocean and the ingredients of the sea.
In the art of artefacts, Latour says “Reality is only present by virtue of the relations human beings have with it.”
Will our ethnomethodolgy insights be distorted by change, to the extent of our everyday perception of life will it be lost in future generations to a new glossy textured bubbled rounded life or on the other hand a much grittier spin off of a Terry Gilliam film. A new wave of useless machines to help you with the most basic tasks in the scene, like in Modern Times.
I can imagine the ad “sick of having to move your hands while you eat!? Then you need Pseudo Eater 3000.”
To be honest considering 2/3 of America are over weight it would properly sell, that’s the sad reality we have come to.
Will we become slaves to technology?
Will people become so attached to computers they will have formal burials of their hard drives?
Can we not safely say that the computers will become more intelligent than us?
Due to computers and robots being able to reproduce quicker than us, is it possible these science fiction films actually a feasible storylines in years to come?
Firstly I think to some degree we are slaves to technology as it is and I can really see people become becoming very emotional about their technology and having to reach out for psychiatric help in years to come with the loss of a loved one(laptop!).
As for robots taking over earth I doubt it but if you asked someone about photography or the internet and explained the idea three hundred years ago, you would have been called mad or in some areas burnt at the stake. I don’t think you can rule anything out in this age especially humans’ creativity and wisdom.
Marshall Mc Luhan said in the Medium is the Message
“When the circuit learns your job, what are you going to do?”
Will eventually computers start doing our mundane jobs and push people out of employment, take for instance truck drivers, with the advances nowadays it is very possible to run the trucks with co-ordinated GPS systems thus sending all delivery drivers to the nearest unemployment line.
It is worryingly possible.
I never truly gave thought to the future in general, besides from year at a time. I’ve opened up a door of a new wave interests and the door has fallen of the hinge. If you asked me three months ago would I would be reading Science and Technology magazines on my own time for enjoyment I would have laughed. For this alone I think this was an interesting and enjoyable project not to mention I have a very commercial viable idea, I intent follow it up and see do I have the means, knowledge and organisation to get this flowing. I feel that people would actually use Music for the Masses. According to the survey there are so many hours where people are playing on their own and this should be tapped into.

Dissertation-initial ideas
my initial ideas are
1. the use of media propaganda in WW2 properly the Nazi side
2. the The Fibonacci Sequence In Art 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc.
The first idea the propaganda has been an interest for me for years.
since studying the war when I was 15 dealing with how a chicken farmer like Gobbels could use media to turn a whole nation to such hideous crimes.
marrying constant lies and throwing up and over again and again until the people were convinced what he said must be true. the work Levi Riefenstahl making films for the Nazi party.
the posters, the newspapers the constant pressure of party broadcasts banging in on there heads.
the second idea also i have been thinking about for a while.
since watching a film called Pi, where they are looking for a particular number 216 digits in length.
the Fibonacci Sequence is discussed in this film greatly.
this sequence crops up in art, music and nature all the time.
the problem with this is how do i put this together with Digital Media?
it is used in modern design like the golden mean and the a band called TOOL use it in their music to structure the music and lyrics.
defiantly will be one of there headings because this is where my head is.

Getting there
All the research done finally
sketch book practically full.
All thats let to do is the prep for the presentation.
graphics and words
I've decided definatly to shoot about a 30 second commercial for the internet because this is what i'm interested plus some simple graphics made in combustion and 3ds max to emphasis my points.
here is a sample opening to my pitch
Music for the masses
The first online community was formed in 1995 called “classmates” since then they have grown in leaps and boundaries.
The problem with these social networking sites, there is no, in most cases -originality, people are using other people music art and books on their profile to try emphasis the being who they are, instead of finding their own individual personality. Re-using information already there to create an online persona.
“The web is no longer about idly surfing and passively reading or listening or watching. It’s about peering sharing, socialising, collaboration, creating within loosely connected communities.”
Wikinomics
This is a fresh community with one goal, mass collaboration for musicians and originality. A place like this could empower the secluded musician who has no confidence in his work and the well educated musician to push the boundaries of his knowledge and experimentation. This is the chance to reach out to like minded people, to grow as a writer and performer.
A perfect opportunity to open up to a new world of musical medium exploration. A contemporary web 2.0 concept for the new original amateur music producer.
Marshall Mc Luhan says “clothing is an extension of our skin” if so I believe and many others will agree, music is an extension of our soul.
In 2000-2001, 3 million was invested into a New Paradigm Investigation, “would the impact of the web on business be good or bad?”
The answer was it would be good, you can draw parallels between music and business- the more musicians that will collaborate the higher quality music will be produced.
The unique aspect of this community is that it is musically based, focus on the production and e-learning.
My space who had 181 million registered users; the community has a massive musical influence and hosts a lot of bands, new talent and solo artists. But giving no place for the masses to form musical side projects and using the medium of the World Wide Web to assist in this.
There is a niche in the market for a social community where people are actually creating and doing something productive instead of the people wasting their time looking at pictures that aren’t even related to them.

people like to feel the experience of live music as a whole,to use all the senses.
we discussed our ideas in a sort of open debate today got a good amount of feedback.
truly happy with my idea now.
the discussion brought up questions like
who would use the community?
would people actually like online concerts?
to the first question i think everyone who plays an instrument, maybe not bands that live in close distance to play together..... but it could be used to upload new songs you've been working on and your other band mates could play along at home and have a structure before you meet to jam in person.
second, most people love the atmosphere, feel, smell all round experience of a festival.
for people who live in the middle of nowhere or cannot travel to other countries or people couldn't afford the amateur or even professional concerts could be broad casted over the web for pay per view fee.
i think this would fit into a lot of other peoples lives, as to the subjects addressed in death to an author in web 2.0
"we have a desperate thirst to be original and different"
this would be a place for original artists to an extent,to portray THEIR tastes and not using band names to express their personality's and tastes like you would see on web 2.0 communities such as face book, bebo and sometimes my space.
this community could be used by the musical people of our world for "a no holds barred quest for self expression" through music.

definate decision on design futures
I've come to a decision, i going to make an online social community for musicians.
a place for people to trade ideas and get feedback on there music they have written etc.
the thing that will make it stand out from the others is that you will be able to jam with no delay over the web thus being able to form online bands.
this can be brought further that there can be online concerts set up online and sell advertising to famous musicians selling there new album etc and sell advertising to companies that make instruments.
maybe include a 1 minute add in my presentation and start building hype.
make simple black white and red posters basically saying "is music your soul mate?" and
"was your first love music?" with no connection information to the website for about a month. This would get people wondering what these are related to and eventually put up the address of the website.
i think this would build up suspense and maybe get people interested before they even know what there truly interested in.
the website would include
to be honest this would be harshe website, they would be no room for bandwidth wasters.
such as people uploading there boring covers of famous songs.
straight away bad effects!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"will this destroy traditional band practice, in musicians parents garages and steel containers by docks?"
"will this in turn drive people further away from each other?"
"will it drive the nail further into splitting face to face in person communities?"
" eventually will people even need to leave their home?"
e-learning,e-shopping food and material, online face to face chat, online concerts?
what next?
will people eventually live in an inpiersible bubble not even venturing out side their front door.
will i help in this trend?
possible name for website
jamming for the jaded
musical therapy

Back to Reality,Two Weeks Down
Monday the Sixth
Handed the design future briefs, initial thought
What?an ad campaign
Through further reading began to make sense.
Not only are we media students we have to see into the future and predict what will happen!
Thanks God for Science Fiction. Truth.
Later That Day
We began to discuss basic design concepts, really basic what colour conveys which kind of mood basically, the thirds so on.
Then we were given a task an advertisements campaign.
Jack and I choose to go with the visually impaired ad campaign.
the idea was to basically to take two people 1 blind the other seeing.
We were going to put them through basic everyday tasks.
Scene 1
the blind person and seeing person trying to prepare breakfast before work, the seeing person
burning himself trying to make a cut of tea and stumbling around the kitchen cursing etc.
the blind person has a routine and has no trouble with this task, humming away to himself "happy as Larry."
Scene 2
The next scene crossing the road to work.
you can picture the blind person knowing the safe route but the seeing person is having trouble and being very fearful and reserved.it would then go into very quick clips of first person camera to the different people. to distinguish between them the seeing persons could see a slimmer of light through his bands around his head and the other difference the seeing would have heavy breathing suggesting panic.
the blind persons view would have a heightened sense of sound so the traffic flying by would be much louder and obvious.
Eventually the seeing man gets crossed.
Scene 3
this is where the 2 people are set up in work in front of computers.
the boss man is giving out because the accounts are not finished and they're given a deadline in the next hour.
this is where the blind man takes flight ahead of the seeing person.
the seeing person has hes sight given back
the seeing person begins to sweat he camera flashing back between the clock on the wall and the seeing person, the deadline is near.
this is where the blind man prevails and keeps hes cool.
the ad would be aimed at blind people in the work place for employers.
basically saying blind people are just as valuable as anybody else.
In the afternoon we were asked to go search for good designs and bad design and what we like about them.
Other
Mood boards
Great way to get feed back and direction from a client
Tuesday the Seventh
with Rona basically we covered the same basic design principles as the day before.
the one thing i really enjoyed about this class was

I've had major interest in this since i watched and bought a film called Pi

The Fibonacci Sequence In Art
0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc
This opened a conversation between myself and Rona, i believe in it and i think the Irish Celts realised this also, they found the spiral to be the symbol of ever lasting and eternal life.
they carved it into standing stones all over Ireland but it has been found all over Europe.
The proof of this sequence is endless!
Design Rules Discussed
Diagonal Rule- Russian and Chinese propaganda
Circle= Warmth and protection
Patterns
broken patterns-repetition etc......
Wensday the eighth
Design Futures
Marshall McLuhan keeps coming up in conversation s borrowed a book from the library
Medium is the Message
"when the circuit learns your job, what are you going to do?"
so far a great read.
My ideas so far are basically a projection in theatre of a film where your headset reads your emotions and therefore chooses where you go next in the film.
the aim that most people will come with different perspective on the film because they have all experienced in some parts a different movie.
Micro chipped music you can update through blue tooth, also maybe a headset where you can watch films as you travel from your microchip.its powered by wireless power.
another interesting topic that popped up was the knock on effects of technology and peoples reliance and almost "addiction to technology."
the effects it will cause in future like psy wise.
that people eventually will grow so attached to there computers that people will eventually start having burials for they P.C.s.
a funny thought but a realistic 1 so say the least.

they carved it into standing stones all over Ireland but it has been found all over Europe.
The proof of this sequence is endless!
